If a user opts into the program fewer than 14 days before their quit date, the system will begin sending messages on that day. Each day within the program is identified as either a pre-quit date (Q- # days) or a post-quit date (Q+#). Program Design: The program is designed as a 14-day countdown to quit date, with subsequent six weeks of daily messages. In the light program, users can text any of the programmed keywords without fully opting in to the program. This adaptation would allow individuals who do not have unlimited text messaging capabilities but would still like to receive support to participate by controlling the number of messages they receive. One possible adaptation of the program is to include a QuitNowTXT "light" version. The program can also be modified to provide texts to users who have already quit within the last month. Users also have the option of changing their quit date at any time if desired. Text messages will start up to 14 days before their specified quit date. At sign up, participants will have the option to choose a quit date up to one month out. At bare minimum, quit date must be collected. The use of only a mobile phone-based registration system reduces barriers for participant entry into the program but limits the collection of additional data. This information will be useful for assessing the reach of the program, as well as identifying possible need to develop libraries to specific groups. If a web-based registration is used, it is suggested that users provide demographic information such as age, gender, and smoking frequency (daily or almost every day, most days, only a few days a week, only on weekends, a few times a month or less) in addition to their mobile phone number and quit date. It is not an option to remove this feature if the program is used within the US. This option is provided every few messages as required by the United States cell phone providers. Texting STOP to the service discontinues further texts being sent. Details of the program are provided below. Rotating automated messages are then returned to the user based on the keyword. In addition, users can request assistance in dealing with craving, stress/mood, and responding to slips/relapses by texting specific key words to the QuitNow. Messages assessing mood, craving, and smoking status are also sent at various intervals, and the user receives messages back based on the response they have submitted. Messages are sent for up to four weeks pre-quit date and up to six weeks post quit date. The core of the program consists of messages sent to the user based on a scheduled quit day identified by the user. The QuitNowTXT program is designed to deliver tips, motivation, encouragement and fact-based information via unidirectional and interactive bidirectional message formats. Although evidence supports the use of text messaging as a platform to deliver cessation interventions, it is expected that the maximum effect of the program will be demonstrated when it is integrated into other elements of a national tobacco control strategy. Based on evidence-based practices, this program is a smoking cessation intervention for smokers who are ready to quit smoking. Overview: The QuitNowTXT text messaging program is designed as a resource that can be adapted to specific contexts including those outside the United States and in languages other than English.

night, I finally got into The French Laundry in Yountville. The turning point for the restaurant, Keller says, was a write-up in the San Francisco Chronicle from social columnist Herb Caen in 1995: Instead, Keller ushered in a tasting menu in the mid-'90s designed so that no one ingredient appeared more than once. Gone were the days of a simple, 4-course menu (then just $47). “One of the most important things we did was change our menu every day,” says Keller. Don’t ever let anyone tell you can’t do something.” But just as Keller found his way back into the kitchen after the East Coast setback, the next day The French Laundry team returned with the right pans and a new menu. “When I lost Rakel, I was lost for three and a half years. We didn’t own a sauté pan we cooked everything in sauce pots.” It was a night one of Keller’s chefs likened to the sinking of the Titanic.īut Keller-no stranger to challenge-was up for it. Not that the journey from local to legendary was without its share of snags along the way, starting on night one: “The worst night we ever had was opening night. The Schmitts realized there was a great opportunity.” And it was an opportunity Keller seized upon, too. When Don and Sally started the restaurant, Napa Valley was a bit unknown. “Napa is unique in the way that it attracts visitors who come for the food and wine-and no other purpose than that. “Back then people still struggled to get in,” says Keller. Before Keller took over as chef/proprietor in 1994, Don (then town mayor) and Sally Schmitt opened the doors to The French Laundry-once a French steam laundry-in 1978 as a family-operated spot open four days a week for Napa Valley locals and visitors alike to get a good meal-when they could. It was chef Jonathan Waxman, then running Table 29 in Napa Valley, who tipped Keller off about the relatively unknown restaurant. But that’s exactly what Yountville’s The French Laundry, which celebrated this landmark birthday back in February, has done, most prominently under the tutelage of chef Thomas Keller. Or rather, do: the first is a contraction of it is, the second, a possessive, as in, the dog bites its tail.In a day and age when even great restaurants come and go as quickly as you can say “rent hike,” lasting four decades-much less spending the majority of those years atop a throne of accolades and best-of lists, including maintaining three Michelin stars since the San Francisco Guide's launch in 2007-is no piece of cake. (And don’t get me started on it’s and its. Bad punctuation drives me nuts, and it’s everywhere. Or do I, Dude?) did not become a bestseller for nothing. “Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation” (I am using quotes because I have no italic command here. The use of quotes to denote specialness, however, is a double-misuse, as aside from the above examples, (as well as of course putting dialogue within quotes), quotation marks are used to denote sarcasm, or the thing’s opposite, as in, about someone who is dim: Oh, she’s a real “intellectual.” One might, if one must, do the same thing in CAPS or boldface or by underlining, and stay within punctuational bounds. I believe vendors use quotation marks because they want to stress that, say, the tomatoes they sell are “great.” They are using the quotation marks as a frame, or a pedestal. However, these dinosaurs are also frequent scavengers. They are found alone or in small groups throughout the island and prey upon anything smaller than themselves. (There is a bug where Dilophosaur will attack tamed Argentavis, along with all other aggressive creatures.) The Dilophosaur is a highly adaptable animal seen in many environments, including beaches, plains, riverbanks, jungles, swamps, caves, and the Redwood Forest.ĭilophosaurus is a small opportunistic predator best distinguished by the twin crests on its head and the membranous frill surrounding its neck. Otherwise, they will scavenge dinosaurs that have already been killed and consume the meat of the corpse. Dilophosaurus do not attack many other species of dinosaurs, except for Parasaur, Pteranodon (which they usually can't catch), Dodo, Moschops, Lystrosaurus, and other creatures which are smaller than themselves, or will not hurt them if attacked. In spite of their fairly powerful arsenal, they have very low health and are easily taken down. While they do not officially live in packs, they can often be found with 2-3 others. Unlike other predators, the Dilophosaurus sometimes chooses to flee the player rather than attack. Think of Photoscape X Pro as a Swiss army knife. It’s around £30 to buy in the Windows and Apple stores, and there’s a couple of updates every year, plus it is on sale every now and again. That’s really about it as far as negatives go for this software. It has limited layer support for certain functions, and they are in no way as functional as on major software releases. It’s destructive software, so if you’ve made a mistake, you have to undo step by step until you get to the point you made the mistake. The masking has great feathering and control, but lacks the intelligence of some programs, so you’ll need a steady hand for precise work should you need to be incredibly accurate. That’s not too say it’s bad, and it’s more than adequate for most edits. You won’t be able to recover the highlights or shadows as much as you can in something like Capture One for example. Raw images don’t have as much latitude when you edit them in the editor as they do in other raw editors. There’s nothing hugely wrong with Photoscape X Pro, but there are a few things which other programs can do better. You can also create GIF’s with the GIF module, Print from the print module and much more besides. An absolutely amazing feature that is a must for people who use fisheye lenses. In the area where you can change perspective and do other similar tweaks, you can also add a fisheye effect, but the main bonus of this feature is that if you edit a rectilinear or fisheye photo and use the fisheye setting in negative values, it will perfectly de-fisheye the image. No fussing or faffing, just choose what you want and apply the border, adjust any parameters and you’ll have beautiful borders in no time. The same thought has been put into the combine option, and again gives you a lot of options to combine images in various rows etc.īorders are carried for well, and there are very many to choose from, in a variety of styles and different implementations. For a lot of people, it’s one of the main reasons they use Photoscape X Pro, and once you’ve used it once, you’ll understand why they use it. This is really well put together, gives you loads of options and an extremely useful tool. One of the many great features is the collage maker. It’s fast, it’s effective, and there’s a lot you can do with it. The Color module where you can do your main workīatch edit is simple to use for resizing images, changing the look of images, renaming images, change image formats and so much more. It’s something I must have in my most used packages, and means you can have full control of what you’re editing by comparing directly on-screen after and during each edit. The Viewer mode is an excellent mode akin to the Lighttable and cataloguing views of other software, where you can have all your images on screen at once, view them, tank them, choose multiple images for batch editing and so much more. Now with update version 4.1, the software is even better, and so I thought I’d review the good and the bad points of the software.īeing used to editing routinely in Darktable, Photoshop and Gimp lately, it’s really easy to pick up Photoscape X Pro again and discover what it has going for it… And there are many. But because it doesn’t offer non-destructive editing, and it’s raw editing isn’t as good as others, sometimes it’s just left aside while I tackle more advanced programs.īut every time I need a quick edit of a jpeg, de-fisheye a fisheye shot (more on this later) or need to make up a poster or do something creative, I keep coming back to Photoscape X Pro. I was blown away by its simplicity, and used it a lot to do quick edits such as crop and rotate and quick exposure fixes. Many years ago when I was discovering software packages, I came across Photoscape X Pro. But there’s one piece of software that I constantly go back for for various reasons, and this affordable piece of software is a great addition for the times you need something that is just that little bit different. There are swathes of editing packages to edit your photographs, some of them really simple to use like Luminar 4 and Lightroom and some of them more complicated like ON1 Photo Raw and Photoshop. I had never had the opportunity to see her conducting and had very little information about her background, apart from knowing that she had just conducted this opera in Dortmund. The musical direction was in the hands of Olivia Lee-Gundermann, who replaced Ivor Bolton. Nixon (Leigh Melrose) arrives in Beijing © J. The space dedicated to the interview with Mao Tse Tung is somewhat reduced. For the arrival at the Beijing airport, the presidential plane is replaced by a large staircase, down which the Nixons and their companions descend. The entire ballet scene is brilliant, as is that of Pat Nixon’s visits. There is a large open space at the front of the stage, while images of the Nixon trip (which coincide with what is happening on stage) are projected on the back wall. The staging by John Fulljames – a Teatro Real, Royal Danish Opera, Scottish Opera co-production – had its premieres in Denmark (2019) and Scotland (2020), and it works reasonably well. It all becomes rather unattractive in dramatic and musical terms, however – an unexpected ending for the viewer who is new to the opera. In Act III, in their respective bedrooms, the Nixons, the Maos and Chou En-lai recall their experiences. With its high political charge, this is undoubtedly the best act in every sense. In the first scene, Pat Nixon makes various visits in Beijing, and then the Nixons attend a ballet performance. del RealĪct II features the strongest part of the opera in musical terms. Nixon in China (The Banquet, end of Act I) © J. Act I ends with the official banquet that the Chinese premier dedicates to the Nixons and the subsequent toasts. The second scene deals with the private interview between Mao and Nixon, accompanied by Chou En-lai and Kissinger, which is concise and quite interesting. There are three acts and six scenes, the first of which takes place at the Beijing airport with the arrival of the Nixons, who are received by Chinese Prime Minister Chou En-lai. The opera is quite appealing although it has its ups and downs – and an unimpressive ending, both dramatically and musically. Neither China’s economic rise nor the changes in the former USSR could be understood without this trip by the US president. President Nixon’s famous trip to China in 1972 was a shock to the world, in both political and economic terms, and it represented an important turn for modern history, because of the unexpectedness and of the consequences that followed. Nixon in China was originally done in Houston in 1987, and it has never disappeared from programming, although one cannot say it has become a repertory opera. The first opera composed by Adams, it was followed by The Death of Klinghoffer and Doctor Atomic. This was the premiere of John Adams’s Nixon in China at Teatro Real and, in fact, its Spanish premiere.
